In-flight Streaming Deals Offer New Market

Image
In a novel turn of events, the in-flight entertainment has entered the streaming age. In a rapid evolution from the plane-wide single offering, through seat-back screens, it seems Delta is willing to take a gamble on streaming licensing. We asked entertainment lawyer with Blake and Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, about this new development.                                                   Brandon Blake 2-way trend Both Southwest and American Airlines, on the contrary, have chosen to ditch their seat-back screens and save on licensing costs, assuming travelers will carry their own range of devices. Delta, however, has made a different gamble.    Stats suggesting that 75% of their 8 million monthly passengers still engage with the seat-back system on flights with it installed. Now Delta is hoping to lure passengers with streaming content deals with Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and Showtime, as well as Spotify, Neon, and A24. Has the Marvel Bubble Finally Burst?

As the recovery of the theatrical industry appears to hinge more and more on tentpoles and their crowd-drawing capabilities, it seems a notable case of Marvel fatigue may have set in. Churning through three Disney Marvel releases in just over 4 months, alongside Sony’s hit Venom 2 , may just have been a little too much for viewers to take. Blake & Wang’s Brandon Blake dives into the numbers for us.                                                                 Brandon Blake   Eternals makes a poor showing With a domestic opening gross of just $71M for Eternals , and a 10% drop near immediately, it seems the latest installment in the Marvel IP family has failed to please. This isn’t on the theatrical exhibition recovery, however, but rather far too much Marvel in too little time.    Unfortunately, it impacts box office momentum at a time when the theaters don’t really need the hit, while theatrical windows remain fluid and studios are unwilling to commit. And, of course,

Roadside Attractions restructures for the new era

Image
There’s been a considerable shakeup at Roadside Attractions in preparation for the ‘changing theatrical marketplace’. In particular, we’ve seen high-profile exits from their marketing and distribution executives. We turned to Brandon Blake, an entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A, for more details.    What’s driving the shakeup? According to co-presidents and co-founders Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen, there’s a need to restructure for the near-term future as we navigate the new theatrical marketplace. Despite their recent decision regarding their other subsidiary, Starz, Lionsgate will not be changing its 40% stake in the studio even with the upheaval.    At the moment, it doesn’t look as though the existing roles of Head of Marketing (Dennis O’Connor) and Senior VP of Publicity (David Pollick)  will be replaced. Instead, ‘veteran team members’ will be adding different duties to their slates.

IMAX delivers its best pandemic earnings report

In a spate of Q3 earnings reports that haven’t always delivered as anticipated, we see IMAX release its best results since the global health crisis upset the earnings apple cart. We turned to Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang, PA, for more insight. Steep earnings rise Announced Q3 revenue topped $56.6M, an increase of 52% on the previous year, with a narrowed loss of $8.4M. Per-share, this transforms the Q3 2020 loss of $0.75c a share into a mere $0.8c a share, also a reduction on Q2’s $0.12c.                                                             Brandon Blake   Of course, in an ordinary year, a loss would be nothing to celebrate. Coming off of the back of steep losses during the height of 2020, however, it’s certainly positive news.  Streaming push On the quarterly earnings call, we also saw CEO Richard Gelfond announce a coming focus on streaming movies, with several ‘leading global streaming platforms’ interested in offering IMAX-exclusive content as a way to gai
