Finally, Some (Vague) Details on the Netflix Ad-Supported Tier

Image
Since their announcement of the pending rollout of an ad-supported tier, we’ve heard very little in concrete details from Netflix. Finally, we have a little more information. Blake & Wang P.A entertainment lawyer , Brandon Blake, breaks down what we know.                                                                 Brandon Blake The Key Questions For consumers interested in the slow boiling promised tier, two key questions remain- How much, and how many commercials will they be forced to sit through? For the later question, at least, we finally have an answer of sorts. Four minutes of ads to every hour of programming. On the former, it’s still a lot vaguer, but we’ve been promised a price point that will land between $9 and $7 a month. The launch date is still set for later this year.  Ad vs Premium So we’re looking at roughly half the current Netflix price of $15.49, assuming that doesn’t see a nudge upwards along the lines of the newer Disney model. It also looks quite solid

The State of the Oscars Race

Image
While it may be a while until the awards ceremony itself, the race for the 95th annual Academy Awards is already a priority for many films and releases across the spectrum. As the race heats up, where are we standing currently? Entertainment attorney Brandon Blake , from Blake & Wang P.A, walks us through current thoughts. Will Best Picture be about Blockbusters? No one can deny that the summer Box Office was one packed with blockbusters, and it’s inevitable that this will be reflected by the Best Picture category for this year. From the surprising success of indie-leaning Elvis and Everything Everywhere All at Once to the booming success of Top Gun: Maverick and the expected traction for the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water , it’s been a fertile year. Even with the expanded Best Picture category, it’s going to be tough to pick out. We’ve had films hit highest grossing film benchmarks. We’ve seen spectacular storytelling. And we’ve seen mas

Universal Pictures Enters Deal for Saudi Distribution

Image
Universal Pictures International and the Emirates-based entity, Majid Al Futtaim Distribution, will now be partnering for releases in both Saudi Arabia and other GOC countries, including the UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar. This will not impact their existing distribution agreements with Four Star Films for the Cyprus and Lebanon areas. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer at Blake & Wang P.A , unpacks the new deal.                                                                   Brandon Blake February 2023 Start Date The entire Middle Eastern global region has seen rapid growth in their local Box Office over the past year. Majid Al Futtaim Distribution, in particular, also handles Warner Bros Discovery titles for the region, and is one of the largest distribution groups operating in the area. Their parent company also owns the area’s largest exhibition chain, VOX Cinemas. Bringing 600 screens across 8 markets to the table, they also hold a wealth of entertainment and

Africa and Asia the New Streaming Battlegrounds

With streaming growth in North American and European markets slowing, it seems that Africa and Asia have become the new subscription battlegrounds. Blake & Wang P.A entertainment lawyer , Brandon Blake, examines the new push.                                                                 Brandon Blake Legacy Players Struggling While Q2 earnings have been subdued across the board, one thing has become abundantly clear- the legacy streamers are struggling more than newer platforms as everyone adapts to the changing economic conditions and wider slow-down in the subscription markets. As the rather crowded streaming field battles it out for ultimate supremacy, it looks like the newly-emerging streaming markets in Africa and Asia could hold the key to unlocking more subscriptions. Netflix, in particular, has made a massive push into the South Africa market, snapping up content deals as well as unveiling a host of new programming for the area. Likewise, Amazon has recently made in-roads

Marvel: Just a Phase they’re in?

Image
While nothing is ever fixed in the entertainment universe, no one can deny the exponential growth of the Marvel Extended Universe has been a massive cinematic drawcard in recent years. Bigger than any character or title alone, it’s become a massive undertaking. With Phases 5 and 6 newly announced at ComicCon this year, there’s plenty to dissect. Brandon Blake, the entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A, looks at the Marvel phenomenon, and where to from here.                                                                   Brandon Blake Thanos, the Raging Commercial Success Up until Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the MCU consisted of massive, near-operatic spectaculars, delivering both staggering commercial success and a fully satisfactory build-up to a star-studded conclusion.  The problem with such wide-ranging appeal and success, of course, is how hard it is to beat. We slid into Phase 4 expecting a ‘palate cleanser’ of sorts, but with the meticulously crafted timelin
