Outgoing Disney CEO Weighs In On Future Streaming Growth

Image
It’s no secret that Disney + delivered subscription growth in Q3 that failed to impress anyone. With outgoing Disney CEO Bob Iger finalizing his last week in the job, we saw him weigh in on the changes needed to help Disney meet their lofty goal of 230-260 million subscribers by 2024. Entertainment lawyer Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang P.A has more for us.                                                                   Brandon Blake                                                Slowing Subscriber Growth Iger was, of course, quick to remain positive on the overall lookout for the company’s streamer, reminding everyone that no company can expect the sudden growth seen at the start of the global health crisis, when people were bored, confined, and desperate for diversion, especially for younger family members. Now people are freer to resume normal life, it’s time to entice more eyes to the service, not rest on those early laurels. To date, Disney + has just over 118M subscribers o

Disney Viewing Up 20% In November, According To Nielsen

After disappointing Q3 subscription results, it seems Disney could be headed for something of a turnaround, at least according to the latest Nielsen data. Entertainment attorney Brandon Blake, of Blake & Wang P.A, looks into the stats.                                                           Brandon Blake 20% increase for the month This 20% upward jump is seen compared to October viewing figures, presumably representing a chunk of Thanksgiving viewers indulging in the newly-released marquee programming Disney debuted at the time. This data comes from ‘the Gauge’, Nielsen’s monthly assessment of viewing for both TV and streaming platforms. Unfortunately, the information for The Gauge is released in graphical format, so we’re never given raw numbers on the data. However, both the upward jump and the overall trend are interesting to note. Broadcast falls There is also a 1% slip for Broadcast TV from the overall October totals, taking only 27% of the total viewing time. Cable still

Universal Confirms Theatrical Windows and Release Strategy

Image
Universal has finally added its voice to the crowd of studios confirming how they will manage their streaming interests and theatrical pipelines into 2022 and beyond. For now, we will see most of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group content head exclusively to Peacock- but with a confirmed theatrical and VOD release. Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang P.A shares the news.                                       Brandon Blake 2022 Slate This new confirmation will begin with the 2022 viewing slate. No more day-and-date releases were confirmed for Peacock this year, either, despite how alluring fresh movies can be for streaming services. Peacock currently stands at 20 million or so active monthly users, and it’s clear they want to grow its potential further, too. Although that benchmark has been announced as ‘way ahead’ of original growth predictions. Will a new exclusivity for Universal movies give Peacock that boost? It’s likely to be tempting fruit to dangle for subscribers. As

Section 230 Debate Underway

Image
The first stage of a 2-part hearing into Section 230 is now underway. For many in the entertainment industry, this debate is long overdue. Section 230 has historically been used by Big Tech companies to dodge and contort their way out of taking responsibility for copyright and IP violations of artists and entertainers on their platforms. While these may not be the most highlighted aspects of the current debate, it’s one whose resolution matters greatly to the industry. Entertainment lawyer at Blake & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, fills us in further.                                                                          Brandon Blake A long time coming Section 230 immunity is definitely something that meant well once, but has come to be a thorn in the side of more than just the entertainment industry. The world has swiftly evolved into a digital age driven by social media far beyond early predictions. Social media tech giants were not anticipated, at least at the time it was writte

Netflix Turns to Spotify for New Income Stream

Image
Spotify has officially launched its Netflix hub, showcasing both soundtracks and exclusive content (including podcasts and interviews) related to Netflix properties. In a crowded streaming market, it’s clear they hope to both increase hype and extend the reach of their IPs in one novel new market. Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney and industry expert at Blake & Wang P.A, takes a look.                                                                     Brandon Blake Dedicated Hub The hub will be available through Spotify services in U.S, Canada, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, for both free and premium users. Netflix currently sits with about 214M subscribers, many of whom do already have a Spotify presence.    The hub is billed as a ‘joint promotional initiative’, and no money has changed hands around the deal. It’s not the first Netflix-Spotify collaboration we’ve seen, either.    Press releases from both companies make it clear that the init
