Will the Emmys’ Date Shift Impact the Oscars?

Image
Earlier this month we saw the Emmys officially shift their date from September 18 2023 to Jan 15 2024, due mostly to the knock-on effects of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s ongoing strike action on ceremony attendance. Some are worried that this will have an effect on the Oscars themselves. Our resident entertainment lawyer , Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang P.A, is here to analyze this claim and unpack what we can expect from a very different awards season this year. Brandon Blake Voting Stays on the Same Timeline Technically, there should be little overlap between the Emmys’ shifted date and Oscar campaigning. Despite the delay in the award ceremony broadcast, voting for the Emmys will go ahead in late August as planned, so no active campaigns will be underway when the awards are presented. The Broadcast Question However, with the Emmys’ live broadcast now overlapping with the Oscar nomination window (set for January 11 through 16 2024) and the SAG Awards final voting which will follow on

A Summer Box Office First for Last Weekend

Image
It’s been a good month for the box office, that no one can doubt. The rapid July upswing in takings has even managed to see a fantastic new first for the post-pandemic period and one that hasn’t been rivaled in the overall box office takings since 2018- and never in summer. But we’d go so far as to say no one, no matter how industry-savvy, could have predicted this one. Distribution logic, it seems, has flown right out the window.   Barbie , unsurpr

Sound of Freedom Heads to International Territories

Like it or loathe it, the exceptional performance of faith-based political thriller Sound of Freedom has been an intriguing phenomenon in the wider independent movie space. Enough that you wouldn’t be out of the ballpark to call the film the sleeper hit of this summer’s box office. Brandon Blake,  best entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A., has more news to share about the film’s successes. Brandon Blake US Box Office Surprise Hit Currently, the film has sold over $127M in tickets for the US box office alone. While there is some controversy surrounding the films pay-it-forward ticket purchasing scheme and how many of those tickets resulted in definite viewings, it's an impressive feat for a film which cost less than $15M to make. It has also stayed high on the domestic charts, managing to beat out Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , which was expected to gain considerable theatrical traction. Its domestic run is now closed. Overseas Runs Last week
