Will the Emmys’ Date Shift Impact the Oscars?

Earlier this month we saw the Emmys officially shift their date from September 18 2023 to Jan 15 2024, due mostly to the knock-on effects of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s ongoing strike action on ceremony attendance. Some are worried that this will have an effect on the Oscars themselves. Our resident entertainment lawyer, Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang P.A, is here to analyze this claim and unpack what we can expect from a very different awards season this year.

Voting Stays on the Same Timeline

Technically, there should be little overlap between the Emmys’ shifted date and Oscar campaigning. Despite the delay in the award ceremony broadcast, voting for the Emmys will go ahead in late August as planned, so no active campaigns will be underway when the awards are presented.

The Broadcast Question

However, with the Emmys’ live broadcast now overlapping with the Oscar nomination window (set for January 11 through 16 2024) and the SAG Awards final voting which will follow on its heels, there is the possibility that key Oscar contenders will be keen to be seen on the red carpet.

Nice for the Emmys? Definitely, as they are likely to see a heightened presence from major movie stars. The Critics’ Choice Awards will probably see a similar profile boost from stars keen to attend both ceremonies as they now overlap. However, the Emmy lineup is already flush with some prospective Oscar contenders. The impact is likely to be considerably less than some are currently predicting.

Other than an unusual (and mostly irrelevant) situation where we will see works from June 2022- May 2023 (Emmys’ eligibility period), 2023 (the Critics’ Choice eligibility) and 2023-2024 for the Oscars all celebrated within a few days of each other, the overall effects on actual campaigning and awards are likely to be minimal indeed, especially on the always star-studded attendance of the Oscars themselves. There’s no reason currently to worry otherwise.
