Sound of Freedom Heads to International Territories

Like it or loathe it, the exceptional performance of faith-based political thriller Sound of Freedom has been an intriguing phenomenon in the wider independent movie space. Enough that you wouldn’t be out of the ballpark to call the film the sleeper hit of this summer’s box office. Brandon Blake,  best entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A., has more news to share about the film’s successes.

US Box Office Surprise Hit

Currently, the film has sold over $127M in tickets for the US box office alone. While there is some controversy surrounding the films pay-it-forward ticket purchasing scheme and how many of those tickets resulted in definite viewings, it's an impressive feat for a film which cost less than $15M to make. It has also stayed high on the domestic charts, managing to beat out Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which was expected to gain considerable theatrical traction. Its domestic run is now closed.

Overseas Runs

Last week it was announced that the film will be heading to 21 international markets, as varied as a spate of Latin American countries, Spain, Australia, the UK, and South Africa. The Latin American and UK/Ireland releases will be direct, while the other runs will work with local distribution partners.

It will open as early as Aug 18 for its South African run, with the Antipodean release set for Aug 24. Latin America will open at the end of the month, and there is a Sep 1 release date for the UK and Ireland.

It’s certainly a phenomenal run for a film from a studio few had heard of until its release. As always, it is wonderful to see an independent movie gain traction with a wide scale theatrical release, especially as this has been a slower-recovering sector post-pandemic. Let’s hope we see some other independent films follow its success.
