Netflix and Marvel Part Ways as Carriage Deal Lapses

Image
While it was mostly expected in the industry, it’s still rather sad to see all of the Marvel-branded TV shows currently carried by Netflix exit the platform as Disney calls them home. Entertainment attorney Brandon Blake, of Blake & Wang P.A , has the news for us.                                                                        Brandon Blake Carriage License Ends There’s no bad blood involved in the decision. Instead, as of March 1st, we will see them head over to Disney+, as the Netflix carriage license expires. This package includes titles like The Punisher, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones. All of the shows, released between 2015 and 2019, represent a period before Disney was so heavily focused on its own Marvel titles and wider cinematic universe. Unlike much of the maneuvering we’ve seen with carriage deals over the last 12 months, this lapse was likely inevitable, and we assume there was never a re-negotiation on the table. Signed before the timeo

Has Korean Content Officially Gone Mainstream in the US?

Image
While it’s no secret that several breakthrough Korean properties have had enormous traction in the domestic market, have we reached a point where Korean content can be declared a ‘mainstream’ genre in the U.S? As more and more notice turns to the inventive storytelling and globally accessible themes we’re seeing from South Korea, Brandon Blake at Blake & Wang P.A looks deeper into the phenomenon.                                                                     Brandon Blake Not a New Boom While South Korean content rocketed to U.S prominence during the pandemic, as people started to explore a wider entertainment world, it’s important to realize it has long been popular throughout Asia and beyond. As early as 2000 we saw K-drama fever take hold throughout nearby neighbors. Nor is this expansion isolated to the U.S, either. Jewel in the Palace, a 2003 drama, became a truly global hit, even receiving remarkable traction in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries, where the typica

Hollywood Agencies Bet on Social Media Influencers to Woo Gen Z

Image
In a crowded marketplace, it seems that major Hollywood agencies are betting on social media stars, especially from the young-skewing TikTok, to mine for new talent. Brandon Blake, Hollywood insider and entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A, looks into the phenomenon of us.     Brandon Blake Courting Gen Z Judging by some second-hand reports of prospective signees first hearing of major talent agencies when they were approached, it’s not being driven by hopefuls from the social media side, either. Instead, it seems the agencies, CAA very prominent among them, are banking on the existing followings and age demographics of these young ‘influencers’ to reinvent themselves for a younger generation. Obviously, they have talent. But it’s also undoubtedly their large and loyal young followings, that traditional Hollywood films are courting as a potential gold mine. After all, they come to the table with insider knowledge of digital marketing tactics, making them a perfect demograph

Verizon Loses Pay TV Subscribers despite Adding Broadband Subscribers

Image
Despite posting what has been described as the ‘best annual performance since 2014’ for the company, it’s hard not to notice the continuing plunge of Pay TV subscribers and, presumably, advertising for Verizon. We turned to Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney and industry expert, for his insight on the losses and gains revealed in their Q4 statements.                                                             Brandon  Blake Massive Pay TV Exit Overall, they have lost more than 69,000 net Pay TV subscribers for their FiOS consumer video service over Q4 alone. This builds on a 68,000 Q3 loss and a 72,000 loss in the year-ago period.  Those are numbers that can’t be ignored. Of course, it’s not Verizon-specific. This is simply symptomatic of the continued exit from traditional linear video as more and more consumers choose over-the-top offerings instead. However, those are numbers that have to hurt. Broadband Boost Of course, for Verizon itself, it’s lucky to have the offset of its o
