What Netflix Will Buy in 2021

As 2020 draws to a tumultuous close, there’s one thing for sure- this has been a year like no other for the entertainment industry. Netflix would soar to prominence as streaming services boomed, driven by the needs of people suddenly facing quarantine and stay-at-home orders. Despite the vaccine roll-out, at least the early parts of 2021 are likely to face similar challenges, so Netflix will likely opt to order along the guidelines established this year. BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment Attorney takes a look at what that is.

The Surprises

While possibly not too surprising in the wake of the controversial murder of George Floyd, it’s unlikely that many would have predicted a rise in demand for documentaries and other fare that highlights the BIPOC experience. Netflix wrappered this in 2020 as their ‘Black Lives Matter’ collection. Shows like Dear White People (700%), 13th (5000%), and LA92 (1300%) would see soaring engagement numbers. With the entertainment industry itself also pushing for greater diversity, we’re likely to see these products in higher demand than ever in 2021.

Likewise, there’s been massive engagement with foreign-language dramas. While it’s to be expected native speakers would consume these, there’s also been a demand for subtitled content, suggesting interest from primarily English-speaking populations too.

Comfort Food For the Soul

Baking shows had an early peak in popularity, while many forms of unscripted reality- from dating shows to organizational tips and DIY, right through to aspirational reality, would all boom. Despite this, Netflix has only opted to renew around half of it’s dating show offerings.

There’s been a 30% spike in demand for sad movies, possibly to help people process a tumultuous year, while stand-up comedy also boomed on the flip side. The romance genre would also see gains of 50% plus demand.

This has also been the year of the documentary. True crime has always been a drawcard to soothe the soul, and 2020 would demonstrate this. Family and kid’s titles would see their own surge, smoothly morphing into festive fare towards the end of the year.

All in all, documentaries, soul-soothers, and lighter fare have been the name of the game in 2020. This is highly likely to affect Netflix’s choice of the lineup for at least early 2021, so now is the time for aspiring producers in those genres to make sure their content is seen.
