International Oscar Entries for 2021 are Bold and Original
This year we see 4 bold and remarkable International Film Feature entries for the Oscars. As of yet, there is no clear frontrunner, and it’s probably unwise indeed to try and predict one in this weird Oscar season of dark horses and indie productions. The entertainment Lawyer BLAKE & WANG P.A has all the info you need.
Possibly the wildest- and the most deviant- of the nominations belongs to India’s Jallikattu. It has impressed critics to the core, despite an on-paper B-movie setup in which a buffalo rampages through a village. Yet we see a crazy progression of figures bring petty jealousy, senseless violence, and sheer incompetence to life in a dazzling reminder of man’s dubious status as the most savage animal of all. Bosch-like cinematography pairs off with impressive direction to create a wild-card that seems improbable on paper, but delivers delight on the screen.
It’s paired against Never gonna snow again, a Polish entry in which we see a fascinating and compelling blend of mysticism, satire, and even farce. Exquisite dream sequences dominate. In another first for the category, Greece’s Apples is laced with humor in a timeless world where no one remembers how to do anything. It pokes fun at technology and humankind both and strikes the right balance doing it.
Lastly, but certainly not least, we have Beginning, an experimental, daring horror it’s difficult to pin to paper. There’s nothing to laugh at in its bitter portrayal of the struggles of a minority in a hostile land, or the lead character’s lost faith, but it’s still an unusual entry for the sometimes staid and ‘arty’ International Feature Film category.
Each of these exceptional (and unique) entries carries critical acclaim and fantastic festival credentials. With last year’s win for Parasite having opened the floodgates for more intriguing entries, viewers and critics alike have a treat on their hands.
