From the SAG Awards to the BAFTAs: Who will win?

With some unexpected wins, especially for streaming giant Netflix, at the SAG Awards, where do we stand going into the BAFTAs and possibly the strangest Oscar Award ceremony to date? BLAKE & WANG P.A one of the best entertainment lawyers in Los Angeles rounds up the contenders for one last look.

While Chadwick Boseman’s nominations and wins for his outstanding performances in Ma Rainey and Da 5 Bloods were no surprise, Viola Davis’ win in Best Actress was far more of a surprise. To date, we have had 3 different actresses win in this category at the SAG, Critics Choice, and Golden Globe Awards. Yet not one of these winners is even nominated at the BAFTAs. Things are not much clearer for Supporting Actress, either. Yuh-Jung Youn’s win for Minari at the SAGs could boost her to enough prominence, but again, it’s been split across other award ceremonies. As it stands, both categories are fiercely competitive and could be anyone’s win.

On the men’s side, we have more defined favorites, with Chadwick Bosman and Daniel Kaluuya so far unbeaten across the SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and Golden Gloves.

For Best Picture, however, we return mostly to chaos. Nomadland has been building impressive steam in the last few weeks, only to have it derailed entirely at the SAG Awards. Minari and Promising Young Woman both remain promising contenders, and The Trial of the Chicago 7’s unexpected win could upset the apple cart, too.

This has been one of the most unpredictable Oscar races to date, and the field remains wide open for many categories. Yet it’s only fitting to acknowledge this topsy-turvy awards season has seen a huge leap forward for diversity in film, with people of color dominating several awards wins and a first-time female-directed Best Picture for the Golden Globes. That alone will mark this year’s Oscar ceremony as one of the most interesting on record. As always, BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment attorney will be on hand to keep you in the loop.
