Is Netflix dabbling in 50 Shades territory?
Like it or loathe it, the release of the much-anticipated 50 Shades of Grey franchise to film was a hot property for cinemas back in the day. It was also notable as one of the first ‘mainstream’ titles to delve heavily into the world of sexual kinks and generated a notable controversy around aspects such as consent and assault which many felt were poorly addressed and glorified. BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment Attorney Los Angeles has received word that Netflix will be going ahead with its own 50 Shades-like franchise, amidst similar controversy.

The piece in question is Polish erotic drama, 365 days. Steamy content aside, it’s been hit by critics and the general public alike. With a plot that features an imprisoned Polish woman given a year to ‘fall in love with a Sicilian gangster, it’s hard to defend the series from accusations of glorifying sexual assault. Yet it has managed to work its way into the streamer’s top 10 list in over 90 countries.
Nor does the backlash seem to bother Netflix. Two back-to-back sequels are being filmed as we speak, and they’re basing the decision on the popularity of the series with viewers. Clearly, they don’t care much about what content they’re putting up, so long as it performs well. The two new installments will be made in-house by the streamer, although keeping the original production team. Will this lead to some softening of the overall theme? While we can’t possibly know at this point, it’s almost inevitable the controversy around this piece will not simply die quietly.
Is this a case of any publicity is good publicity? Netflix obviously believes so, and is willing to put considerable bucks behind the production. It will be interesting to see what direction they take the series- which is already set to deviate significantly from the books, a strategy that didn’t entirely work for Game of Thrones and its fanbase. As always, BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment Lawyer Los Angeles will keep you informed.
