Netflix dominates Nielsen ratings

While the streaming wars heat up, Netflix is still managing to hold out in its top position as the US’s most-watched streamer. Entertainment attorney and legal expert, Brandon Blake, breaks down the latest Nielsen weekly U.S streaming chart data as Netflix manages to score a 10/10.

In this week's latest figures, covering the start of August, we saw All American, a Netflix property now wrapping up its 3rd season, manage to rack up 1.433B viewing minutes. In doing so, it just edged out another Netflix original, Outer Banks, with 1.423B views. Not perhaps a total reflection on their relative viewer pulling power, as All American had an extra 3 days on the service to pull interest.

Of course, the Nielsen ratings are not free from controversy when it comes to streaming. We’ve looked at the issue around streamer data before. Most notably, despite monitoring Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix, there are no figures for mobile or PC viewers. Only TV screens are measured. Also, of course, the fact we’re looking at these figures nearly a month after they were last relevant- although that’s by arrangement with the streaming providers, who have been very tight on releasing data all around.

Thorny measurement issues aside, however, this is one of the first times we’ve seen Netflix colonize the full top 10 in a long time. Virgin River and Outer Banks taking their slots as Netflix Originals, while the remaining 6 slots went to acquired programming, including CW’s The Flash and AMC's The Walking Dead. It’s interesting to see The Walking Dead still occupy a top 10 slot, given it is now released to AMC+ a week before release anywhere else.

Is this just a temporary blip in the streaming data wars? Or a sign that Netflix is once again rising to dominate a market it helped shape and create? It’s an interesting milestone to see once again, either way.
