Amazon Strikes First-Look Deal with Safehouse Pictures
Amazon has now closed a first look, three-year film deal with Safehouse Pictures. Entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, unpacks the details we know so far.
Brandon BlakeA Varied Output
Founded by Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold in 2005,
Safehouse has brought some noted pictures to our screens. With Netflix’s Atlas,
a sci-fi thriller, currently in production, as well as Apple’s new live-action
Godzilla/Titans Monsterverse series, they've had credits on King Arthur:
Legend of the Sword, Spinning Out, My Blind Brother, and Underground.
Harold was also the executive producer and writer for Obi-Wan Kenobi,
currently running on Disney+, and has writing credits on The Flash and Transformers:
Rise of the Beasts, due to release next year. Safehouse Pictures is
currently represented by the CAA and their attorney,
Carlos Goodman
Forward-Thinking Content Creation
In the press release surrounding the
announcement, they praised Amazon Studios as a ‘forward thinking content
creator’ with solid creative work. The deal will, of course, benefit Amazon
Prime Video subscribers globally.
First-look deals mean that a specific
distributor gets the right of first refusal (or negotiation) with an
independent studio. This means they get ‘first dibs’, if you will, on the
opportunity to co-own, invest in, or buy outright new productions entering the
market, or older productions that have had a long absence from the general
market.
Despite the announcement of the first-look deal,
we don’t yet have specifics on cost, although it will run for three years
starting in the 2023 year that lies just around the corner.
It is always satisfying to see more independent
production houses and studios enter into these deals, as it not only guarantees
a solid chance at premium streaming spots, but also broadens the general market
further. It will be interesting to see what future collaborations come from
their work together.
