Hocus Pocus Sequel Sets Nielsen Streaming Movie Record

It may be the year for reawakened old franchises to shine, or so it seems. With Top Gun: Maverick managing to rejuvenate a franchise dead for nearly 3 decades, we’ve also seen Hocus Pocus 2, the sequel to the 1993 original, turn in a solid performance. And now it has set a Nielsen record for itself. Entertainment lawyer with Black & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, shares the news.

Top Movie Streaming Minutes

Netting itself a truly impressive 2.7B streaming minutes on Nielsen’s weekly chart for September 26 to October 2, the film topples Encanto’s 2.2B minutes of viewing, achieved in the last week of 2021. Of course, Encantoalso had only its first weekend qualify for that period, so it may not be a true apples-with-apples comparison, but it is certainly good to see the increase in viewership either way.

Interestingly, it also managed to perform surprisingly well across age demographics, with 25% of total viewership each going to 2-11 year olds, 18-34 year olds, and 35-49 year olds. It also managed to pull the original movie onto the chart with 774M minutes of streaming and seventh place- not bad3 decades later! Remember that Nielsen’s charts do not over mobile viewing numbers, either.

Dahmer Takes the Series Record for the Week

It is, of course, always notably easier for series to rack up minutes, especially those released on Netflix’s binge-watch model. However, topping the list with 4.4B views, Dahmer breezed into an easy first place. It also takes the seventh spot for single-week audience since the 2020 introduction of domestic streaming to the Nielsen charts.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power managed to pip House of The Dragon by just under 60 million minutes- however, House of The Dragon has a tricky release timing with its Sunday drops, so the newest episode only ever has a 3 hour window to contribute.

Overall, it is nice to see a varied slate continue to rack up the minutes on domestic streaming services across all demographics.
