Barbie Beats Out the Boy Wizard for Warner Bros’ Title

It’s official. Barbie now reigns supreme as the biggest movie ever in the Warner Bros. Discovery stable. While that’s still using figures which aren’t adjusted for inflation, the same as its domestic victory, it’s a victory indeed for both Warner Bros and the wider box office, and one worth some celebrating. Top Global Gross

Barbie has now officially passed the $1.342 billion gross for the second installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This makes it the top-grossing film worldwide in Warner Bros history. As of last weekend, that comprises $592.8 million States-side, and foreign takings of $745.5 million. This also means that by the middle of this week, Barbie will cross the $600 million mark in domestic takings. This will make it only the 13th movie in history to do so. If it manages to punch through the $1.43 billion mark internationally, it will also become the top-grossing title of all time for a female director, and secure it the No. 15 spot for all-time highest grossing movies.

Can It Make $1.5 Billion? Maybe

Does this mean Barbie, which is entering its 7th week post-release, can hit the $1.5 billion mark? It’s certainly still possible, although we are seeing a sharper drop-off in box office takings for the break-out hit. As is inevitable this deep into its release, of course.

 

Even if it doesn’t quite make that coveted benchmark, Barbie has certainly been a record-breaker of note. Already sitting pretty with the title of the biggest Warner Bros movie release in North America, alongside the top-grossing title for 2023 (so far), it is pretty definite that we will see it eclipse Super Mario Bros’ $1.36 billion internationally to take the top worldwide earner spot for the year, too.

 

The box office has certainly embraced pink this year. Let’s hope to see a few more hidden hits prop up the exhibition industry for a strong finish to 2023.
