WGA Strike Talks To Resume: Let’s Hope For Resolution

In the current dual-strike environment, it sometimes seems very little progress has been made at all. We’ve even seen a negotiation phase just to get back to the negotiating table! However, it finally seems like there should be some movement from at least one of the strikes, with the WGA and AMPTP set to return to the bargaining table this week. Brandon Blake, the USA entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A. shares what we know so far.

Negotiations This Week

While we’d love to be able to offer fully concrete details on the new talks, sadly we are still in vague territory. Other than a promise of scheduling a meeting ‘this week’, exact timelines are still vague indeed. However, despite some very eager talk from the AMPTP itself about their willingness to end the strike ‘as soon as possible,’ all does not seem to be well on their side of the bargaining table.

The announcement comes right as talk of ‘internal friction’ amid the top streamer and studio CEOs is rising, and a possibly warranted backlash for their recent hire of a crisis PR firm (the Levinson Group) has netted them some bad press. We’ve also heard some rumors- though, admittedly, no concrete proof- that several of the AMPTP’s cornerstone studios are keen to negotiate outside of official boundaries if movement cannot be officially restarted.

Progress Of A Sort

Putting the rumor mill aside, however, this is at least a positive step forward for the longest of the two current strike actions. The AMPTP has also been keen to head off rumors that they are acting in anything but solidarity with each other at this point. While the August 11 counteroffer resulted in little but further poor press (accusations of trying to bypass guild leadership were raised), at least this offers an olive branch of hope that we could soon see some progress on the matter. Let’s hope that by next week, there’s positive news to report.
