Rounding Up the Specialty Box Office
What’s happening in the specialty box office realm this week? While Oscar-contender Poor Things continues to dominate people’s attention, there’s plenty more to enjoy. Blake & Wang P.A. entertainment attorney, Brandon Blake, recaps what is going on.

Poor Things Continues to Capture Awards Attention
It’s been a good week for Poor Things, from Searchlight Pictures’ stable. Fresh off a flurry of Golden Globes wins, including Best Motion Picture for the musical and comedy category, the film has grossed another $2M in its fifth week for a cume of $14.2M. It is currently being shown on 750 screens across the country.
More Great Performances
Poor Things is far from the only specialty success story at the moment, however. American Fiction, another strong Awards Season contender, continued its slow burn over 114 screens, an increase from the initial 40 that will further expand to 600 locations this week. Now in its fourth release week, it managed a respectable $1M weekend to bring it to a cumulative total of $2.98M. How much of that cume comes from such a late release weekend is telling as to how much word-of-mouth has driven this picture, as does its coming expansion.
We also saw solid openings this week from the thriller Some Other Woman (Falling Forward Films), earning $87,000 from 225 screens. Mayhem! (IFC Films) took $6,800 from just 24 screens. And the 2023 Christmas box office marvel, The Boy and the Heron, from Studio Ghibli-offshoot GKids, continues to dominate. Now the 4th-highest grossing anime of all time for the North American market, the film sits currently at a cume of $39.6M and is likely to steal a lot of awards attention, too. Unsurprisingly, it also took home the Animated Film Golden Globe.
The indie and specialty box office continues to thrive. Let’s hope to see that pattern repeated in 2024, too!
