Thor’s Fourth Installment Officially Takes Franchise-Best Opening
The return of Chris Hemsworth to the titular role in the fourth installment of Marvel’s stand-alone Thor franchise has paid off hugely for the franchise. Earning $302M globally, it’s officially the best opener for the films. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A, shares the details.
Brandon BlakeBoosting the Box Office Rally
As well as setting a juicy new record for the stand-alone franchise, its domestic opening of $143M will also be a welcome padding for the 2022 Box Office recovery. It also takes third position behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the best opening of the pandemic era. This places it 29th overall for the MCU titles.
A global start of $302M is nothing to sneeze at, especially from the fourth installment in a spin-off franchise. The Thor series, in particular, has never been one for mega-debuts. Strangely, it scored less positively with audiences than Ragnarok did, however.
A (Nearly) Crowded Marquee
Looking at the wider picture, it’s also nice to see a rather ‘crowded’, at least in pandemic terms, marquee for domestic cinemas, with Minions: The Rise of Gru joining Thor, Jurassic World Dominion, Doctor Strange, Top Gun: Maverick, and a veritable slew of others in cinemas nationwide.
Overall domestic revenue for the second weekend in July is expected to top $235M. It’s almost double what we saw at the launch of Black Widow, but more importantly, still a 92% increase on 2019 benchmarks.
With Minions managing to squeak itself into the best family title since the pandemic, and Top Gun maintaining a high chart position (now days away from hitting $600M domestically), it’s a thriving space overall. Additionally, the solid performance from arty title Elvis is proving that something other than blockbusters can still sell well in cinemas.
Hopefully the overall Box Office recovery gains even more momentum from here on out. And it’s certainly worth celebrating the milestones on the way.
