Paramount + Announces First Cornerstone Mobile Distribution Deal in the UK

Like it or loathe it, the idea of streaming on mobile is going nowhere. In a record first mobile distribution deal on their international market, Paramount+ has now announced a partnership with the UK’s Three, a mobile phone company. It’s an interesting way to grow their direct-to-consumer distribution market, certainly. Entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, has more.

Available on Monthly Plan

This deal will be on offer to all (new) Three customers who opt-in for a qualifying monthly plan. This, in effect, makes Paramount+ the exclusive subscription partner for video-on-demand at the mobile company. Depending on the plan chosen (and its associated tariff), Three subscribers will get a short-term complementary access to the service. Once the introductory offer expires, they will be able to opt-in for the service permanently at whatever the current price at the time is. They will be able to use mobile billing to pay for the service, too.

A New Take on Distribution

While we’ve seen a swing away from purely chasing subscriber numbers over the last year for all the major streamers, this could be an interesting way for Paramount+ to chase its 100M subs by 2024 goal. Given they are currently sitting somewhere around 40M, it is certainly needed! All the same, Paramount+ has been averaging around 15B hours consumed on its services. Yet it does need an edge if it is to remain competitive against the likes of Disney+, Netflix, and even the Warner Bros Discovery flagship HBO Max service.

Will this be the growth push it needs to flourish? It’s certainly a market that’s very under-tapped at the moment, so there could be solid potential. The real question is how many of those complementary subscriptions will roll over into the paid service. For now we can only wait and see.
