Manhattan Gains Its First Purpose-Built Soundstage
There’s a new little slice of LA in Manhattan: Sunset Pier 94 studios. Sunset Studios has a long history of managing purpose-built soundstages in Los Angeles, with their latest portfolio expansion now bringing one to New York, too. We have Brandon Blake, entertainment law firms los angeles at Blake & Wang P.A., with the news.
Two-Year Long Dream
Sunset Studios, a joint venture between Hudson Pacific Properties and Blackstone, has now officially opened its first purpose-built Manhattan soundstage. Initially headed by Vornado, the project eventually came to life as a private-public partnership including the New York City Economic Development Corp.
New York is, itself, in the midst of revitalizing its tax credit program, hoping to lure filmmakers back to the state, so the timing is serendipitous. Sunset Pier 94 is now months from completion, and already accepting bookings from January 2026.
What It Offers
A 266,000 square-foot project, there are six full soundstages and production control room facilities, alongside a host of other amenities. The soundstages are also designed with virtual production in mind. With a central location along the Hudson River and West Side Highway, close to the Broadway district, this could be an ideal home base for productions looking to leverage New York's expanded tax credit offerings.
Mostly, for soundstage support, filmmakers have had to look outside the Manhattan area, either to New Jersey offerings or into the boroughs. Centralizing soundstage access could be a game-changer for the area, especially as production volumes are finally on a permanent rise after the dip caused by the dual strikes of 2023.
With shiny new facilities alongside a compelling revision to their incentives plan, is New York ready to make a comeback as the go-to filming destination? They have certainly put in the hard work to revitalize what they can offer as a filming destination.
