Samsung Expands FAST TV Network in Bid for Dominance
Samsung, already a leader in sheer volume for FAST channels, is now introducing a broadcast network-style central platform to anchor its dominance in this growing market. Unveiled at their NewFronts presentation last week, there could be interesting shifts ahead. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer Los Angeles at Blake & Wang P.A., takes a closer look.
Introducing Samsung Television Network
Ambitiously calling it the “broad-FAST channel of the future,” the new FAST “network” will incorporate live sports offerings alongside key library fare such as late-night stalwarts. Letterman himself made an appearance at the NewFronts event to talk more about the show’s new channel.
We’ve seen considerable movement from the “connected TV” sector of late, including expansions from Roku and Vizio (now backed by Walmart). As with the streaming consolidation before it, we’re seeing a rising emphasis on original offerings and exclusive programming. The FAST sector itself suffers from something of a fragmentation issue, with the landscape becoming ever-more cluttered with little centralization.
Rising Successes
Samsung TV Plus, in particular, has been pushing an ambitious expansion in programming of late, seeing a 30% rise in viewership to match. According to their NewFronts presentation, they will now be pumping further investment into new creators, including some well-known streaming faces such as the Try Guys. No doubt, their 50 sports-focused channels will also serve them well. Sports services, especially live sports streaming, have been a major driver of expansion and new viewership across the board of late. Samsung’s partnerships with key Minor League Baseball and in-season NHL games from specific teams may prove to be a great drawcard for new viewers.
Overall, Samsung is pushing to become a dominant name in the FAST landscape, and with ambitious new changes and plans for further expansion, we expect to see them play a cornerstone role in the sector going forward.
