The Devil Wears Prada 2 Set for a Major Domestic Opening

While we have been seeing strong positive results from the 2026 box office (certainly better than at this same point in 2025), the headlines have been dominated by a few heavy-hitting titles. It seems that The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sequel to the 2006 original, is set to join them. Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A., shares the preview news.

$77M Opening Weekend

The sequel was pegged to do $70M- $75M in its opening weekend, and managed to slightly exceed those expectations, bringing in $77M to top off the summer box office, three times that of its predecessor. This is particularly interesting, given it's the first female-driven movie in recent years to take that coveted first summer weekend.

Experts were predicting that this could hit $200M globally in its first weekend, and the movie managed to excel there as well, ultimately bringing in $233M.

Nostalgia Heavy

Given that the original film will celebrate its second decade this year, it's quite the achievement. However, we have seen this nostalgia-fueled pattern play out in cinemas a lot in recent years. In fact, the original Devil Wears Prada was a Fox release before their Disney merger, and the Fox 2000 label, which it originally called home, has cut its ties with the Disney-merged entity.

With $100M in production costs (before marketing), the film was a risk from the start, but it is one that seems to have played out in Disney’s favor. The question now will be if, like its predecessor, it can sustain that tremendous start and continue to deliver such impressive results at the box office as it passes its debut weekend. Should it manage that feat, this well could be one of the better performing releases of the year, and certainly shows all the early signs of success.
