Disney Star Focusing On Local Language Programming for Europe

We’ve finally seen what Disney+ had up its sleeves for European Originals. A dazzling slate of 10 shows, including those aimed for their general entertainment brand, Disney Star, has been released this week. It’s anticipated this will jump to 50 international titles by 2024. BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment Attorney Los Angeles dive in deeper.

This planned rollout will see local content pitched to Disney’s 95 million subscribers, across their 58 territories. The first 10 slated shows will roll out in Italian, German, French, and Dutch. Supposedly, a UK slate of programming is also on the cards. This EU-focused bundle features comedy, drama and docu-series. While Disney+ will continue to carry the bulk of their family-friendly creations, Star will cater to an older audience, something like Hulu.

Disney Star officially launches on 23rd February 2021 and will remain a title within the Disney+ bouquet. Eight of the ten slated foreign titles will stay on the Star network, hoping to act as a lure in the increasingly crowded streaming wars. It’s not all Star will be offering, however, with shows like Lost and American Horror Stories headed to the lineup.

What looks interesting? There are The Good Mothers, looking to showcase mob women for once. Add a fascinating parallel dimension series, Parallels, and a historical drama focusing on East Germany’s first black police officer, Sam- A Saxon. They’re aiming for authenticity, placing a focus on local language stories rooted in actual happenings.

It’s hoped some of the first of these will hit the airwaves late in 2021. Star certainly offers Disney some greater flexibility to cater to the adult market, which may be needed in a crowded marketplace. Intriguingly, Disney is reportedly open to co-production projects as they aim to make the channel the go-to for European streaming.

Will the House of Mouse continue to dominate the streaming market with this intriguing local-focused pich? We will keep a careful eye on developments.
