Lionsgate Signs Multi Year Movie Deal with Peacock

All theatrically-released Lionsgate films will be heading exclusively to Peacock as their Pay 2 window over the next few years, starting with their 2022 theatrical slate. Brandon Blake, an entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A, has more details on this intriguing shift in the film content landscape

Included Content

This new agreement with the NBCUniversal-owned streamer will open with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and also includes their planned expansions to the Expendables and Hunger Games IPs, John Wick: Chapter 4, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and Borderlands, based on the popular video game franchise.

This means that this content should debut on the streaming service in 2024. Lionsgate recently signed a deal with Roku to take over the Pay 1 window, meaning they will debut the same content immediately after its first pay theatrical session on Starz.

Echoing Trends

Complex as these deals can seem on paper, it speaks to the increasing demand for first-run film access across a wide variety of platforms. This includes premium SVOD and lower-tier AVOD streaming content, as well as basic cable and the emerging FAST, or ad-supported free TV services.

To date, movies are one of the most consumed content offerings on Peacock, so it’s easy to see why they would court a major player in the film landscape like Lionsgate. They have also recently announced that three Universal Pictures releases will go to the service in 2023- The Killer remake, comedic Praise This, and the LeBron James biopic entitled Shooting Stars. No doubt we will see further expansion of their early-access film slate through the remainder of this year, too.

As the so-called ‘streaming wars’ heat up, and streamers compete for market attention, core deals like these will help shape who makes it, and who does not. With that in mind, this interesting new deal is well worth watching.
