Top Gun Takes $1B Worldwide
It’s been another milestone weekend at the global box office, with both Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World: Dominion soaring to new heights. Blake & Wang P.A entertainment attorney, Brandon Blake, dives into the facts and figures.
Brandon BlakeTop Gun Crosses $1B
Not only has Top Gun: Maverick managed to cross the $500M mark domestically and the $1B mark globally, but it’s also done so within its first 31 days, a fear managed only twice in the pandemic period. This new record also makes it Tom Cruise’s highest grossing movie of all time.
Additionally, and despite a rather rocky start, Jurassic World: Dominion now sits at $747M globally, making it the seventh pandemic-launched movie to cross the $700M threshold. With only a 45% drop, that strongly suggests it, too, could be headed for the $1B mark eventually. After some very mixed critical reception, that’s quite a turn-around.
Smaller Pics Shine
Nor is the positivity only for the blockbusters. Warner Bros’ semi-biographical pic, Elvis, managed to kick off with a $50.5M global debut. Without the glittering effects and massive tentpole budget, that’s something to be proud of, too. With 50 markets to its name, that’s not a bad haul at all. Heading to the cinemas direct from Cannes, it’s also pulled in $560K from Imax releases. There’s still a few new markets to come for this one, including Japan, so it’s well worth watching. Despite a slightly larger backing and budget than the indie average, it points to better things to come for the struggling mid-range movie market theatrically, too. And if we manage to see that gain traction with further entries, it could be the missing final piece of the box office recovery we’ve all been waiting for.
All in all, there’s a lot of reason for positivity in the current box office release slate. Hopefully there will be even better results to report by the end of 2022.
