Dune 2 Promises Some Box Office Breathing Room

After a sluggish-at-best start to the 2024 box office, much hope has been pinned on the lavish and highly-anticipated Dune: Part 2 release from Warner Bros Discovery and Legendary Entertainment. With lofty predictions of a $170M debut weekend to pep up the flagging box office spirits, is this the film that has finally managed to deliver that boost after several false starts and flops? One of the best Entertainment lawyers Brandon Blake, at Blake & Wang P.A., has all the news from this weekend’s much-anticipated opening.

Beating the Benchmarks

Let’s start with some excellent news. Dune: Part 2 managed to outperform predictions for its opening weekend, both domestically and internationally. At the domestic box office, it closed on $82.5M, slightly higher than originally expected. Most of this extra came from a better-than-anticipated Sunday, pulling in an extra $1.3M for the kitty.

There’s similar good news on the international front, too. With Sunday actuals included, Dune: Part 2 pulled in $182.5M, significantly higher than the predicted $170M.  Its offshore bow is currently in the $100.2M region. Its top markets were the UK, France, Germany, Korea, and Australia, in that order.

Tracking Ahead of the First Installment

As well as beating the anticipated benchmarks for its opening weekend, Dune: Part 2 is now tracking 81% ahead of 2021’s Dune. This also positions it rather favorably against other top performers from recent years, including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Oppenheimer.

Additionally, it is doing better than expected among younger demographics, which bodes well for its staying power through the spring period. To add one last, shiny hope to the pile, many of those polled over this weekend have expressed interest in seeing the film theatrically again.

It’s far too early to start counting our box office eggs before they hatch, as the flop of Miss Marvel aptly reminds us. However, Dune: Part 2 has certainly delivered on its promise to reinvigorate the lackluster start to the 2024 box office. Let’s hope to see that momentum build from here.
