Ne Zha 2 Shoots to Global Prominence on the Back of Successful Chinese Release
The Chinese New Year box office has launched what may be the world’s next biggest animation success. As Ne Zha 2 continues to blow through local Chinese records, it’s also beginning to make its name on the global stage. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer Los Angeles at Blake & Wang P.A., shares this exciting news.
Bigger than Inside Out 2?
It is thoroughly remarkable to be talking about global records around a film that has yet to release outside of the Chinese market. Ne Zha 2 will only open this week in North America, New Zealand, and Australia. However, with takings now topping $1.37B from its Chinese run alone, Ne Zha 2 has already knocked The Super Mario Bros. Movie out of its spot on the Top 3 animated films of all time.
If it manages even a moderate market presence in its global expansion, it could
be poised to knock Disney’s Inside Out 2
out of the top spot. It’s already the highest-grossing film of all time in the
Chinese market, and the only film to make it to $1B in a single market.
Potentially, it could go much higher, with some predicting a $2.19B final. This
would leave it as the 5th biggest movie of all time worldwide.
Remarkable Success for a Non-Hollywood Movie
Notably, this also makes it the first non-Hollywood title to reach that billion-dollar mark, not just on animated film lists, but overall. It’s also one of a small number of films that have made it to that coveted $1B marker outside of the North American market.
It may be too early to call this a full reversal of the downturn in Chinese theater-going, but it certainly brings a lot to celebrate to the table. This is definitely a film to watch as 2025’s release calendar gets fully underway.
