Warner Bros. Discovery Wins at the Weekend Box Office
A strong box office benefits us all, of course, but Warner Bros. Discovery must have a particularly shiny smile this week, with both the stand-out performers coming from them. Our entertainment attorney Los Angeles in the know, Blake & Wang P.A.’s Brandon Blake, fills in the details.
Shattering Domestic and Global Milestones
The Minecraft Movie has now passed the $900M threshold globally, making it the second-highest grossing video adaption of all time (and that’s without adjusting for inflation, which may see it take the top spot). Needless to say, it’s currently the top contender for top grossing film of the year domestically so far. Captain America: Brave New World slides into second place.
The Surprising Success of Sinners
Behind it comes a more surprising Warner Bros. Discovery title at the domestic box office, however- Sinners. Having just crossed the $200M mark in local markets, and sitting just below $300M globally, a supernatural vampire pic is an odd one to capture moviegoer’s imaginations, but we’ve said that about almost all breakout hits lately. Maybe the real lesson is that there’s no set formula for what lands well with audiences. Interestingly, word of mouth has mostly powered this one to success.
The question now is how well it will hold up against new entrants, as this was a bit of a dull week for new releases. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has faced some criticism lately for trying “too hard” for original and even avant-garde titles, and Sinners success will no doubt prop up the team batting for these titles in a big way. With a price tag of close to $80M, critics were convinced it wouldn’t make back costs. So much for that prediction. Now, let’s see if Warner Bros. Discovery can carry that same magic into the rest of the release calendar this year.
