Another Strong Box Office Week Ahead
While this won’t go down as the most exciting box office weekend on record, it managed to carry on the fantastic momentum that began with Labor Day and keep cinema seats warm. To keep us up to date on what’s performing well, we have Brandon Blake, our entertainment attorney Los Angeles from Blake & Wang P.A.
Ballerina Puts on a Solid Performance
The John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, was projected to take around the $30M mark, so its $25M across North American screens ($10.6M domestically) was just about on the mark, if a little lackluster. It brought in $51M across all 82 territories where it initially released, again roughly in line with the expected $60M. This puts it pretty much on a par with John Wick: Chapter 3 in 2019, and it’s rare for a spinoff to exceed the parent franchise’s installments.
Lilo & Stitch Stay Strong
The live-action remake of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch continues to dominate the No. 1 spot, adding $35M to the kitty and taking its total comfortably past the $300M mark. This pushes it into the No. 2 spot behind A Minecraft Movie in the top-grossing movies of the year.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning took in roughly $15M, while Karate Kid: Legends, Sony’s latest nostalgia-miner, managed a credible $10M. On the indie circuit, Focus Features took The Phoenician Scheme from 6 screens to 1,600, taking around $7M, after taking one of the best indie theater opening averages of the year last week ($93.4K)
Dangerous Animals, another Cannes graduate, was also booked for 1,600 theaters, although no totals have yet been reported. IFC’s Clown in the Cornfield, however, managed $3.6M.
With Neon also seeing The Life of Chuck roll out for a 16 screen limited release over 8 markets, it was a solid weekend for the indies, with some strong movement at the wide release box office as well- and that’s the momentum we need to see to close out the year successfully. Let’s hope it continues.
