Will F1 Reach $600M? It Seems So
Despite a reasonably slow box office weekend, we have seen some strong holdovers contribute to both the domestic and international box office, which should also translate to some big milestones. Not least of all for F1, another one of this year’s surprise releases that has done tremendously well. Brandon Blake, our expert entertainment lawyer at Blake & Wang P.A., has all the details.
F1 Success Continues
Jurassic World: Rebirth is still on track to pass the $800M globally. More unexpectedly, however, F1 is still seeing exponential success with audiences. The Apple-Warner Bros film is eyeing a $600M worldwide cume, equal to DC and Warner Bros. Superman. We also saw another strong performance from Weapons, which topped this weekend’s box office with $18.4M over 73 markets.
F1 saw only a 23% drop from last weekend, impressive numbers for a film already in its 8th frame. The film is doing particularly well in Korea, where it is now the top movie of the year, beating out even local titles. The film is currently the fourth-biggest Warner Bros. film ever. It is doing well in China, the UK, France, and Mexico as well.
Weapons Does Well
In another victory for Warner Bros, Weapons saw a 33% drop from opening weekend, with an international cume of $59.7M, and total cume of $148.8M. The Bad Guys 2 also saw its staggered offshore release accelerate this week, bringing in $13.7M over 67 markets, for a drop of 34% in the holdovers. Its international running total is now $60.2M, better than the original at this point in its release cycle. New markets included China, where it saw a positive reception.
Returning briefly to the Jurassic World reboot, it saw $9.9M over 83 offshore markets in its 7th session, a 39% drop from the last frame. Japan was a stand-out market, even with strong local competition, and accounted for $20.8M in total over just two weeks.
Overall, this week’s box
office saw some notable successes, and we hope to see it build further from
here.
