One Battle After Another Wins a Box Office Victory

While we may be in the slow season between the summer box office and the year-end slates, the box office is still ticking over nicely. With several strong performers this week, we have Brandon Blake, our top entertainment law firms los angeles at Blake & Wang P.A., with a recap.

One Battle After Another Emerges Victorious

In its sophomore session, we’ve seen another strong performance from One Battle After Another, with only a 22% drop at the international box office. With a further $21.7M in the kitty this week, it has now taken $101.7M total to date. The film performed particularly well in New Zealand and Germany, as well as the Latin American and Nordic markets. It will be PTA’s largest film in 13 Latin American markets.

Surprisingly, much of this interest was generated not by ad campaigns, but by audience word of mouth. The film will be released in China later this week, its final market.

Other Strong Performances

With another live Taylor Swift “event film” on offer, bringing in $13M over 54 international markets, we saw box office takings this weekend around the $46M mark. Event films like this have been an interesting introduction to the box office, going beyond “just movies” to making the cinema a social setting to bond with other fans. It’s an interesting concept, one which builds out “standard” movie fare with releases specifically hoping to bring together fans in a social-style setting, and has been another useful part of reinvigorating the box office.

With Conjuring: Last Rites and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle both still turning in solid performances, and a re-release of Avatar: The Way of Water also adding modest traction as James Cameron and Disney hope to drum up interest in the franchise ahead of the December release of a new title, it was a solid, if not particularly remarkable, box office weekend. Here’s to many more like it.
