Will Super Mario Galaxy Movie be the Biggest Release of the Year to Date?
In recent years, box office success has lain with family-friendly animations. In fact, the first Super Mario Bros movie kick-started this swing back in 2023. With another Super Mario title ready to leap onto the silver screen, could we be looking at another animated success for Illumination/Universal and Nintendo? That’s the question Brandon Blake, Our best Entertainment Attorney with Blake & Wang P.A., is ready to answer for the looming Easter stretch.
Predicted 5-Day Domestic Opening
April 1 may be best known for its jokes, but it will also be the day that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens, and the 5-day predictions for the Easter holiday period are no joke. Even the most conservative estimates peg this one for a $160M plus opening debut.
The film is tracking better than its 2023 precursor did at this point, which brought home a 4-day of $204.6M and a 3-day of $146.3M for the second-best domestic Easter opening ever. It lags just behind 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which accounted for $166M.
Success seems to be waiting just around the corner already.
Appealing Demographics
The videogame-based The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is, unsurprisingly, tracking well with men under 25, but like many of the most successful recent releases, it is performing well among almost all demographics, which is always promising. Its unaided awareness, which tracks how many moviegoers are aware of the film’s release without prompting, is as strong as the recent Lilo & Stitch movie, and already ahead of both its precursor and A Minecraft Movie.
While The Drama is the other main release for the weekend, a title from A24 that’s heavily skewed towards young women, the film is currently tracking at a very credible $15M, but is unlikely to hold a candle to the earnings potential of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which should free it for a box office-dominating weekend ahead.
