Peacock and YouTube Team Up
Building on the deal inked last year, Peacock and YouTube will now be expanding, adding Peacock bundling to YouTube Premium as well as some livestreams for sports events on YouTube channels. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A., shares the news.
YouTube and Bundling May Be the Next Hit
It certainly seems like YouTube Premium is keen to make itself the next major entertainment bundler. Peacock will now be included with the $15.99 YouTube Premium service, beginning next year. With NBCUniversal itself preparing for a split from its parent company, Comcast, this could be a lucrative source of new subscribers for the streaming platform, which has only just managed to break even in the last quarter and remains one of the smallest mainstream streamers.
It will also see much of its premium content, including several live sports streams alongside its core library, hit YouTube Premium streams. Reciprocally, some of YouTube’s offerings will be sent on to Comcast’s Xfinity and Xumo platforms, although it's presently unclear what will happen if NBCUniversal does make the split.
The Lure of Sports
In size, YouTube Premium now dwarfs Peacock, with almost three times as many subscribers, although that number is shared with YouTube Music, so it may not be a direct comparison. However, much of the expansion under the revised deal seems focused on sports streams, something Peacock has always had a strong share in. It will now also serve as production partner for select live events on YouTube.
It’s quite an upgrade on the initial deal, too, with Peacock moving from simply being a “service” on YouTube’s platform to being one of its signature subscription offerings. Peacock is in the midst of a flurry of similar deals, including one with Apple TV, so this could also be an indicator of their own bid to build more market share than they currently have.
