The Odyssey Claims the Title of Best-Performing R-Rated Movie

Beating Deadpool & Wolverine


It’s certainly been a year for setting and re-setting box office records, that’s for sure. As of Thursday last week, Universal Pictures confirmed that the Nolan-directed retelling of Greek legend had brought in $1.352B globally, stealing the title from its previous holder, Deadpool & Wolverine, which totaled $1.338B across its 2024 run.


The Odyssey has had something of a historic run at the box office, and now claims a domestic cume of $516.3M, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie to date at the box office.

Ryan Reynolds, known for the offbeat humor he brings to the Deadpool role, offered Nolan congratulations online, celebrating by sharing clips of him battling Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine inside a Honda Odyssey minivan in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

The Odyssey was also the first narrative film to be shot entirely for IMAX. Indeed, another of the records it can claim is the highest-grossing IMAX release so far. It’s expected to be a feature of this year's awards season. 


The Odyssey, along with Toy Story 5 from the Disney stable and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, have powered the summer box office to an impressive $4.24B domestically, a 23.7% increase on last year’s takings, and only just short of the highest summer on record, 2013’s $4.75B. 


Things are looking strong to close out the year with one of the best box office totals since the pandemic, if not the best, and it seems this could be the year we can finally call the box office recovery real, especially as films of all sizes and audience demographics have seen immense success.

Covering 55 theaters in both Belgium and France, UGC is currently one of the most influential theater chains in the area.
