Is Superhero Fatigue Over? Momentum Builds for Next Marvel Release

 As Avengers: Doomsday sees strong ticket sales three months ahead of its actual release date, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to see box office success, are we headed for another superhero wave? Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A., takes a look.

$50M With Three Months to Go


Domestic pre-sales have now passed the $50M threshold for Avengers: Doomsday. The film only releases in three months. It’s certainly an excellent start for the next Marvel installment, which will be competing for screen space with the third installment in the Dune franchise when it opens in December this year. Especially given that Dune is set to dominate IMAX screens, at least for its first weekend in theaters. 


Interestingly, Avengers is also selling well across premium formats, with Infinity Vision tickets dominating presales. The recently released trailer for the film also comes in as the second-biggest trailer “premiere” to date, setting several records of its own.

Taking Back the Throne?


Disney is already seeing some rewards for the film, with Marvel titles racking up an impressive 420M hours in August as people respond to both the Avengers trailer and Spider-Man. This may be the biggest theatrical release-driven lift we’ve seen for Marvel titles to date. 


With Spider-Man: Brand New Day having turned in a record-beating performance, it seems there may have been some recovery for superhero titles at the box office. Additionally, a festive period release should prove ideal for this film’s target audience. 


Will this momentum continue through the launch and beyond? Will we see a repeat of the Spider-Man phenomenon in just a few months? It’s almost guaranteed Avengers will do well at the box office, but how well is going to be the real question. For now, we can only wait and see.
