Gladiator 2 Set for a Stellar Offshore Start

Despite being a two-and-a-half-decade-old franchise, it seems that Gladiator, the massive Roman epic by Ridley Scott, still has pulling power with modern audiences. After a spectacular international debut, the film will head to domestic screens this weekend. Brandon Blake, our entertainment lawyer Los Angeles and insider from Blake & Wang P.A., shares this success with us.

Best Start for Ridley Scott

Gladiator 2 opened in 63 international markets last weekend, with the US debut this coming weekend. It has accumulated almost $90M in its first weekend, aligning well with pre-release projections. Incidentally, this also makes it Ridley Scott's best overseas start as director.

Nor do Paramount miss out, for whom it is the best offshore bow on a movie rated R in the US. It took the No. 1 slot in most markets, with its best start ($11.4M) over 722 UK locations. It also turned in fantastic starts in France, Spain, Australia, Mexico, Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Korea. The film will launch in China and the US shortly.

Other Great Performances

In other international box office news, Venom: The Last Dance, which has already passed the $400M mark, has officially passed the international lifetime of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This worldwide $436.1M breaks down into $308.5M international, with the remainder domestic. Again, Mexico, Germany, Korea, and the UK have been top-performing markets, with the addition of just over $90M from its Chinese release as well.

Red One has also done surprisingly well in its class, with an offshore cume of $50M and $84M globally. It is continuing to hold strong at the box office. The Wild Robot and Paddington in Peru also turned in respectable performances.

Overall, the international box office has had another good week, and that’s always great news to share. Let’s hope this momentum continues into the end of the year for a strong finish.
