A Rebrand Underway for AMC Networks

There seems to have been a spate of renamings throughout Hollywood in the last few years, and now the trend has come for AMC Networks, home of the vastly popular The Walking Dead IP. Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A., has the news to share.

Moving Away from TV Networks

The name change itself is not major. AMC Networks will now be known as AMC Global Media. The deeper story, however, lies in why the company has decided to shake up its brand.

The “Networks” part of their current name refers, of course, to the TV networks that were once foundational to success in entertainment. However, as TV itself slips from the ultimate destination to one of many potential options, the parent company has decided to reflect that better in their branding. These kinds of repositioning attempts are hardly new in the industry, but they do reflect the many changes that have impacted the film industry over the last decade rather well.

The name change comes into play from the middle of this week, and the articles of incorporation were filed in Nevada.

Streaming Focus

This comes alongside a focus on rejuvenating its streaming platforms as well, which include the premier AMC+ as well as Acorn TV, Shudder, and a host of others. While AMC continues to operate its cable networks, some with great success, it’s become clear that they are no longer the heart of their business.

With streaming now the default way to enjoy entertainment at home for many viewers, shifting away from the network positioning of their old brand may be a smart idea, especially with the launch of The Audacity, clearly intended to become AMC’s newest anchor show, right ahead.  What will remain curious, however, is why they chose the same moniker (Global Media) as their competitors, A+E, did last year.
