Another Strong Weekend of Box Office Favorites
While this weekend at the box office looked a lot like the last, with only Detective Conan as a meaningful new entry, it was still a successful one. Brandon Blake, our entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A., breaks down this week’s figures.
The Returning Champions
Super Mario Galaxy Movie managed to take a further $69M domestically, with $83.5M from international territories, bringing its global cume to $628.7M. This leaves the sequel the biggest MPA title of the year so far, but only the second-highest grosser, with China’s Pegasus 3 still managing to stay ahead at $645.1M. It’s highly likely we will see that fall by next weekend, as a $700 worldwide is near guaranteed at this point, especially with Japan and Korea still to open.
The breakout hit Project Hail Mary continued its winning streak over 89 territories, too, adding $24.5M domestically and $30.6 globally to bring its cume to $510.6M. It’s been AmazonMGM’s top grosser for a while now, surpassing Creed III, but this will begin to push it into competition with some of their James Bond titles as well. The movie expanded to Indonesia and Israel this week.
A New Entry
Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway managed to open into the No. 3 spot with $26M internationally, and it was also one of the biggest opening weekends for the Japanese franchise.
Behind it, to round out the Top 5, we have The Drama, and an enduring presence from Pixar’s Hoppers, which is currently sitting at a global cume of $354.4M. The Drama has a global cume of only $62.1M to date, but that’s not bad for a smaller A24 release, and the movie is still in its second week.
Overall, it may be a weekend full of returning favorites, but it’s always good to see action and energy at the box office.
