A Box Office Packed with Records

It’s been another great weekend for the box office, with breakout hits Backrooms and Obsession both performing strongly, a great start for the latest Scary Movie title, and some success for Masters of the Universe. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A. has the news.

A Great Relaunch for Scary Movie

Despite having last hit cinema screens over a decade ago, Scary Movie managed a very credible $55M opening weekend domestically, enough to snag it the top spot in this week’s box office charts. It also took in an additional $50.5M from international territories for a global total of $105.5M.

Behind it is Masters of the Universe, with $29.3M domestically and a further $25M internationally from over 80 territories. However, the bulk of the attention has been focused on the No. 3 and No. 4 contenders.

Indie Domination

A very well-earned third place went to Backrooms, the breakout viral hit that cost A24 under $10M to create, which continued to hold strong with another $25.9M in the kitty. However, this one may fade out pretty fast, as it is seeing a considerable drop week-on-week, and this week was down 70%. Still, its performance so far has boosted it to A24’s best-performing title to date.

Obsession, meanwhile, which has recently become the top-grossing festival acquisition of all time, brought home another $25.6M to its $152M domestic total. It’s also now the first film outside of the Christmas blockbuster cycle to have second and third weekends stronger than its first. Obsession has shown remarkable staying power, dropping only 7% this week.

These two remarkable films were followed by Fathom Entertainment’s The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, based on a cult Australian adult webseries. Michael, which made it into the 7th-place spot, is now set to cross the $1B total soon and is likely to become Lionsgate’s top-grossing release to date as well. All in all, an impressive weekend indeed.
