Obsession Drives the Biggest Second-Weekend Spike in Modern Box Office Records
Overall, the Memorial Day weekend was far more successful for the box office than anticipated, but even among this stellar field, there’s one notable stand-out: Obsession. Brandon Blake, Entertainment Lawyer at Blake & Wang P.A., has the success story to share.
Low-Cost, Remarkable Performance
In just under 2 weeks since its release, Obsession has managed to bring home $68M. That might not seem all that overwhelming until you consider that the film cost less than $750,000 to make, and was a debut picture for filmmaker Curry Barker. Over the Memorial Day weekend itself, the film saw a 39.4% uptick on its opening weekend, from just 2,615 theaters. Ordinarily, we only see second-week spikes like this at Christmas, and typically with far more popular titles than a relatively unknown horror film. Even some industry veterans can’t recall another case quite like this one.
Finding the Right Audience
Currently, the film is playing mostly to those between 18 and 34, and this is one that has become increasingly important to how well titles play at the box office. Obsession has also been performing well out of its weight class from day 1, managing a third-place spot on its debut weekend, just behind the immensely successful The Devil Wears Prada 2. It also knocked Michael down a spot on the Memorial Day charts, with each day outperforming the last. The film is now expected to pass the $70M mark by the middle of this week.
Not bad, for a film that cost Universal, under the Focus Films banner, only $15M to acquire, in a small bidding war that saw A24 and Neon both outbid at the Toronto Film Festival last year. The film added another 100 locations for the Memorial Day weekend, and apparently, it is drawing a lot of repeat viewers and an increasing number of female watchers. As indie releases go, this is definitely one of the best performers we’ve seen in a long, long time, and it will be interesting to see how it holds from here on out.
