Peacock Launches Ad-Free Offerings on YouTube Primetime
If you were hoping to access Peacock’s Ad-Free tier through YouTube, you’re in luck, as YouTube honors part of its 2025 distribution deal with NBCUniversal with a new launch. Brandon Blake, entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A., has the full story.
Peacock Premium Plus Now Available on YouTube
The deal will now see Peacock Premium Plus available as part of YouTube’s Primetime Channels, the culmination of last October's deal between the two companies. It came on the heels of a rather contentious renegotiation battle that could have ended in a potential blackout.
This was one of several clashes YouTube faced last year, with Disney’s 15-day impasse possibly the most notable. Perhaps we can write them off as teething troubles, given YouTube’s own evolution from a video hosting site to a serious pay-TV contender. The usual sticking point is YouTube’s access to customer data through the agreements.
A New Deal Emerges
However, NBCUniversal opted to revive its linear cable outlet, NBC Sports Network, instead, and will now bring a mix of live sports coverage and select Peacock titles to the service. Viewers have even been able to access up to 10 minutes of live coverage free via its Telemundo Deportes channel on YouTube, with viewers then offered the opportunity to continue with a Peacock Premium Plus subscription thereafter.
On the YouTube side, they have been increasingly emphasizing these channel store partnerships over time, no doubt as a lucrative way to improve their subscription offerings as well as their entertainment offerings as they finally move into the entertainment provider bracket, rather than just another tech service.
NBCUniversal will no doubt be glad of the broader customer base, even if in a media partnership, as it prepares to separate from its parent company, Comcast, and its planned spinoff of its entertainment assets under the NBCUniversal brand. This deal, which was announced last week, will see Comcast separate into two entities, with the entertainment assets remaining as part of NBCUniversal, and the telecom-focused arm remaining as Comcast Biz.
