It’s a Surprisingly Strong Hollywood Slate at the Chinese Box Office

With Spider-Man already performing fantastically for Chinese audiences, it seems The Odyssey is keen to make its mark on the Chinese box office as well, especially with a splashy IMAX release to back it. Brandon Blake, Entertainment lawyer with Blake & Wang P.A., has the full story.

Fantastic Previews

With almost $7M in the kitty before the film was released, The Odyssey looks set for a strong Chinese run. The film was, of course, shot specifically for IMAX, but seeing such a strong surge of interest before the film’s official opening was probably one of the biggest surprises ahead of its first weekend.

Overall, the film accounted for roughly 7% of this past weekend’s business, an impressive feat indeed for a very limited number of screens. It’s currently tracking excellently on local review site Douban, and China looks set to deliver a strong addition to the film’s total international takings, which have already passed the $1B mark.

Spider-Man Holds Firm

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day turned in a second strong weekend at the Chinese box office, adding a further $28.9M to its takings, bringing its local total to $185.4M in just 12 days. Ironically, a strong segment of its success also came via IMAX screens, even setting a record for the market. It currently looks set to beat the 2019 release in the franchise’s record for the territory.

The two films shared box office space with a host of local film releases, continuing a trend that has been consistent since the pandemic disruptions. China’s box office totals now stand at just north of $3.5B.

Not quite the runaway success of last year’s Ne Zha 2, of course, but certainly a strong and flourishing box office nonetheless. And it looks like there’s still space in Chinese moviegoers’ hearts for a Hollywood release. It’s just a case of matching the IP to the audience.
